DJI is continually changing the game every time they come out with a new product. For a technology buff that’s something to be excited about.
Here at Torqued magazine we were able to get a good amount of time to experience the marvel that is the Phantom 4 Pro Plus. I call it a marvel because the amount of technology packed into this item is astounding. And crazy enough as it came right out of the box, it only got better with every firmware update. It’s like getting a newer cooler machine with every update.
I’ll start this review listing the options this bad boy comes with.
First off, it has a 1″ CMOS camera sensorIt films in 4k resolution at 60 frames per second.Includes 5 directions of obstacle sensingAnd has a whopping 30 minute flight time per battery charge.
Flight performance: Max speed 72 kph (44.7 mph) in sport mode. 50 kph (31 mph) in P mode.
Weight 1388 grams (3.06 pounds)
Intelligent flight modes: Active track, tripod mode, draw, featured, point of interest, course lock, home lock, follow me, waypoints
Camera: 3 axis mechanical global, 1″ sensor, mechanical shutter, 4k at 60 fps, max image size 20mp
Those are just some of the highlighted features. I’m just gonna go into what I love about the Phantom 4 Pro Plus.
First thing, the pro plus comes with an awesome touch screen tablet with a 5.5 inch 1080p screen integrated right into the controller. I absolutely love this screen. And it’s more than twice as bright as regular smart devices. I have flown previous generations of phantoms where I used my phone to view the video feed. At times on a bright day or in direct sun I couldn’t see anything on the screen, not so with the pro plus screen. It comes with multiple apps predownloaded to it right out of the box. DJI go, Facebook, and Instagram to name a few. Making it ever easier to share your pictures and video with others. I especially loved the DJI go apps video editor. I have always been horrible at editing video. But the editor option on this app made me a pro. It includes music and filters to give your video that pop that it needed.
With the mechanical shutter it helps the camera capture motion or fast moving objects without the blur that I’ve seen on other cameras. I tested it by spinning the Phantom around in various directions and the mechanical shutter kept up marvelously reducing the blur you’d see on pretty much any camera these day.
If your unfamiliar with the intelligent flight modes I’ll give you a quick learners course. You can while in flight for example tap on the tablets screen hit ok and the drone will fly to the point that you taped on. With the draw feature you can draw literally a route on the screen and the Phantom flies that route. Then there is active track which is my favorite. You can click on a subject, be it a person, car, motorcycles or a stationary item as well. Once you’ve clicked on that subject the Phantom will then follow that subject all the while keeping the subject in the center of the pictures frame. I used this features tons of times. You can use it to rotate around a moving or stationary subject giving a full 360 degree view all in the center of the picture frame.
The Phantom 4 Pro Plus comes with 5 directions of obstacle sensing. What does that mean? Using sonar technology the Phantom 4 Pro can sense how close it is to buildings, walls, trees, whatever. And if needed will stop it’s self before hitting an object, thus protecting your investment made into this marvel. It has forward, back side and bottom sensors. And they work wonderfully. Your distance from the forward objects is shown right on your screen for you to see.
Another amazing feature is the return to home feature. This feature using GPS technology will return the Phantom to the point of take off. If you lose radio signal or the battery gets too low or simply want the Phantom to fly itself back to you it can do that with the return to home feature. This has been an option on previous Phantom models but now with the Pro model is includes opstacle avoidance. It will sense and fly around obstacles by itself on its return to home. Man that’s just amazing to me.
The Phantom 4 Pro is so intelligent that it can tell by a persons arm movement that it needs to center that person in the camera frame and then will take a picture of that person with a simple arm gesture. All on its own. When I was a kid the movies I watched would try to portray what the future would bring. Flying cars, hoverboards, were all things I thought of when the future came to mind. Well the Phantom 4 Pro Plus is definitely what The Future is, and should be. Finally technology that is put to amazing use and gives us amazing results. Well done DJI well done.
