Review of the ABUS Granit Detecto XPlus 8077,
When given this opportunity to test out and review a top of the line security lock for my motorcycle I jumped at the chance. During my life I’ve lived in some interesting places. All of these places have had one thing in common, Thieves. I cant count how many times my motorcycle was attempted to be stolen. Trying to be smart I came up with many home grown ideas of how to safely secure my bike from thieves. Some of these ideas possibly helped some probably not.
This is where the ABUS Granit Detecto comes in and leaves no doubt to you or possible thieves that you mean business when it comes to protecting your bike.
The first thing I noticed about this device is that it is intimidating just looking at it in the package. It’s beefy and brightly colored. Then you notice phrases on the package like “Movement Sensor” “Picking Protection” “Lighted Key” I was like wow this thing is pretty high tech.
ABUS has a security rating for their products that they rate from 1 to 20 with 20 being the max security level. The Granit Detecto XPlus 8077 is rated at a level 18 security rating and I can see why.
After opening the package I noticed it came with the lock, a very nice lock carrying pouch and two keys, one being a push button lighted key. It also includes the batteries.
Time to put it on the bike, I may be alone in this but I’m a guy that likes to read instructions on new items I’m using. The instructions that came with this item were easy to understand and included many things you may miss by not following them. One thing that stood out, is that this device is intelligent. It will not arm the alarm if its not hooked to a motorcycle disc brake. It can actually tell if it’s on a disc brake or not. When putting the lock onto the disc brake it’s armed by turning the key then the lock will give a beep indicting it’s alarmed. Then the light indicator on the lock will flash red periodically advising of an armed lock. Once armed any movement of the bike or lock will set the alarm off. Beautiful thing about this lock is with it’s weight, wind and other small disturbances won’t set the alarm off. I’ve used other motion activated alarms and they always went off when the wind was blowing.
If someone tips your bike up off the kickstand or pushes your bike the alarm will go off blaring a 110 dbs to the ears of the thief.
Commonly these days thieves recruit 4 or more of their buddies and simply lift bikes into the backs of trucks. This basically makes regular disc locks useless. With this motion sensor no one is hauling this bike off. Another great thing there is no way to disconnect the alarm without unlocking the lock. No wires that a thief may cut nothing exposed to tamper with.
Another great aspect of this lock is the key it’s self. You get two. One with a push button light to assist in locking or unlocking the device in dark places. Plus the keys come with a key code card so you can have another made if you lose them. I pretty much missed an entire track day with my bike due to lost disc lock keys. Not to mention how many of us use disc locks and forget they are even on the bike? My hand is raised. With the motion alarm the lock will assuredly let you know that the lock is on the bike, way before you roll a few feet and damage your bike.
In my opinion this is a very well designed disc lock. Made to withstand todays criminals and their tools. It will definitely assist in protecting your beloved motorcycle from thieves and your own lapse of judment when forgetting you have a lock on your bike.
Check out this lock for yourself.
